Today we have an excellent example of cooperation between science and business – all the main Lithuanian science and study institutions are participating in the selection process, bringing together strong business enterprises and associated business structures in consortia. Three selected consortia will have to implement at least seven R&D projects by 2026 each, with a total of at least 15 unique products, 20 spin-offs and 20 prototypes. This will help create even more opportunities for Lithuania,” says Aušrinė Armonaitė, Minister of Economy and Innovation.

The mission-based science and innovation programmes are divided into three themes, with one consortium to be selected for each of them. There are three applications for the theme “A Secure and Inclusive e-Society”, three for the theme “Smart and Climate Neutral Lithuania”, and two for the theme “Innovation for Health”.

“We are focusing our resources on mission themes that matter to society by inviting our country’s strongest universities and business partners to join the consortia. We hope that this synergy will lead to new high value-added products and technologies born in the labs reaching the end user as soon as possible and making a significant difference in society. The strongest consortia, selected by international experts, will not only apply scientific knowledge by engaging the most promising talents, but will also establish centres of excellence in priority areas,” says Jurgita Šiugždinienė, Minister of Education, Science and Sport.

Applications have been submitted by the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences, Vilnius University (two applications on different themes, with different partners), the Centre for Physical Sciences and Technology (two applications on different themes, with different partners), the Lithuanian Energy Institute, Vilnius Gediminas Technical University, and Kaunas University of Technology.

The number of consortia members varies widely, ranging from 4 to 15, with an average of 11 members per consortium. The budgets planned for the projects also vary widely, ranging from almost EUR 18 million to almost EUR 70 million.

As for the theme “A Secure and Inclusive e-Society”, the applicants intend to implement a project on digital defence for secure and resilient societies, and establish an ICT centre of excellence and a centre of excellence in quantum computing and research.

As for the theme “Smart and Climate Neutral Lithuania”, the consortia plan to set up a smart photonics plant, develop smart and climate neutral manufacturing technologies and materials, and implement a project on green hydrogen for energy, transport and industry in Lithuania.

As for the theme “Innovation for Health”, there are plans to establish a translational genomics technology centre and implement a project on chronic non-communicable diseases in an ageing society.

Three selected consortia are expected to be announced by mid-June. Applications will be evaluated by international experts.

In total, nearly EUR 78 million has been earmarked for the implementation of mission-based science and innovation programmes by 2026.
