By developing new technologies, we have gained more trust from existing and new customers, which is why the company has grown 8-fold in the last 3 years, with turnover rising from EUR 1.7 million to EUR 14 million. We are not stopping, and we are continuing our R&D&I projects – next year we plan to be among the first in Europe to start serial production of 800V silicon carbide (SiC) powertrain,” says Laurynas Jokužis, CEO of UAB Elinta Motors.

The company is currently conducting long-term reliability testing of SiC powertrain, both on a power measurement bench and in cars. A total of 10 system prototypes are being tested. The new technology is expected to replace the Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBTs) currently used to transmit power to the motor of an electric car.

“SiC technology is significantly more efficient than the current IGBT technology and has twice the energy losses under the same conditions. As a result, a SiC motor controller can be either significantly smaller and lighter or twice as powerful as an IGBT,” says Mr. Jokužis.

Developing the tractor of the future

The power system project is part of an ambitious goal to develop an all-electric tractor weighing between 12 and 26 tonnes. The company is designing a twin-power module engine with a total output of 600 kW. The control electronics, batteries, high-voltage and charging systems for the electric motor are also being developed at the same time, and the technical solutions for the prototype are being tested in a Ford Raptor SUV.

“We have heavily modified the SUV with a custom transmission to increase the load on the motor, thus creating a smaller simulation of a tractor unit that is easier to test and refine. We have carried out various calculations and simulations to develop the motor, and we have developed a number of new solutions to improve efficiency. For example, the rotor is cast from copper at 1,200°C, which allows for significantly higher efficiency and reliability, and 94% overall system efficiency,” says Mr. Jokužis.

He adds that the interior of the prototype car features a new gear lever and a new touch-screen computer with the company’s proprietary software running on the Android operating system.

“The software allows you to monitor every parameter of your car without any diagnostics, and while you are driving, the entire journey is recorded on the server. As the accelerator is pressed, the data is recorded and the software draws curves that we can then analyse and improve the prototype. Engineers can see errors remotely on the computer, quickly correct them and install system updates,” adds Mr. Jokužis.

What is unique about the motor being developed by the company is that a single motor can deliver up to 180 kW of continuous power, compared to 70–80 kW of continuous power delivered by two motors in Tesla models, for example.

“Continuous power is the power that the motor of an electric car can maintain consistently for at least 30 minutes. This is the kind of power, not instantaneous power, that is needed to keep a commercial vehicle running. We have fitted two 36 kW batteries with a charge capacity of 210 kW in the Ford Raptor prototype, giving the car a range of 200 to 300 km. The planned commercial vehicles will have several times larger batteries and a charging capacity of 350 kW,” says Mr. Jokužis.

Investments will guarantee development

The company has been granted EUR 782 000 under the R&D&I project support programme to implement this ambitious project; however, the budget will not be used in full, as the project objectives have been achieved more efficiently than planned prior to using the funds.

“We are looking forward to the new wave of EU investment and the next calls for R&D&I projects by the Innovation Agency. We plan to use the investment to expand the development of other components of electric vehicles, such as the battery management system (BMS), the electric vehicle control unit (EVCU) onboard charger (OBC), and research into gallium nitride (GaN) transistor technology in high-power electronics,” Mr. Jokužis shares their future plans.

The Innovation Agency will soon launch new calls, “InoProgress” and “InoMaturity”, to help companies in Lithuania to continue their R&D activities.

“Businesses with breakthrough ideas are already invited to follow the calls announced by the Innovation Agency, consult with our experts and submit project implementation plans for EU funding. We are proud of the businesses in Lithuania that are developing advanced solutions that raise our country profile and increase business competitiveness. We believe that their success stories will encourage more companies in the country to invest in the development of higher value products and services,” says Agnė Vaitkūnienė, Director of the Investment Management Department of the Innovation Agency.

To strengthen the Lithuanian economy, the Ministry of Economy and Innovation plans to implement measures totalling almost EUR 1 billion by the end of 2023. Of this amount, EUR 365 million has been earmarked for business, innovation and investment.

All current and forthcoming calls with detailed descriptions and terms are available on the website of the Innovation Agency.
