EUR 1 billion for the Lithuanian economy: preparation for the transformation of industrial enterprises of the country
Investment in the transformation of the country’s industry has started under a EUR 1 billion plan to stimulate the Lithuanian economy, drawn up by the Ministry of Economy and Innovation. A feasibility study on industrial transformation will be carried out to reduce pollution in Lithuania’s industrial enterprises. Investments in the creation and development of industrial sites will also start this month to promote the creation of sustainable jobs.

According to Minister Aušrinė Armonaitė, Lithuania has an objective to reduce pollution from its industrial enterprises and strengthen the green economy, while also implementing the EU Green Deal programme. In line with the EUR 1 billion plan for the economy, EUR 165.2 million has been earmarked from the Just Transition Fund for the industrial transition towards a climate-neutral economy, and a further EUR 97.6 million has been allocated for the creation of sustainable jobs by investing in the creation and development of industrial sites, and for attracting investors. This will open up even more opportunities for Lithuania.

The feasibility study on industrial transformation will analyse the feasibility of carbon capture and storage, and the use of hydrogen and other innovative technologies in the most pollution exposed Lithuanian industrial enterprises in Kaunas, Šiauliai and Telšiai counties. EUR 500 000 has been earmarked for this study. In the next few month, the Innovation Agency is expected to launch a public tender for the preparation of the feasibility study.

“The feasibility study will identify the necessary preparatory actions that should be taken at national level to successfully reduce pollution and use innovative technologies in the most polluting industrial enterprises in Kaunas, Šiauliai and Telšiai counties in the future. The results of the feasibility study will help these companies to transform and meet national climate change mitigation targets by 2050,” said Iveta Paludnevičiūtė, Chancellor of the Ministry of Economy and Innovation.

A EUR 30.5 million call for Akmenė, Jonava and Mažeikiai district municipalities is expected to be launched in May this year to encourage them to invest in the creation and development of industrial sites.

The Ministry of Economy and Innovation has prepared a plan of almost EUR 1 billion to strengthen the Lithuanian economy. Around EUR 365 million has been earmarked for business, innovation and investment, EUR 320 million for the digitisation of the state and business, and EUR 268 million for the greener economy by the end of 2023.
